League play for baseball starts this week

Head coach for the Mustangs Randy Gabriel told the Forum over the weekend that San Juan Basin League play for baseball starts this week. The guys faced Dolores Tuesday, April 1, and it happens to be the first time Dolores has had a varsity team in several years.

Gabriel said there are a lot of kids out for baseball, 23 total, and he’s happy the sport is keeping kids active and involved. A combined team of Nucla and Norwood, Gabriel said it’s about an even split from each school, and thankfully the team is still 1A.

With both a JV team and a varsity team, Gabriel said the guys will get a lot of playing time on the field this season. There are three seniors — Josh Platt, Jake Hulst and Paxtin Caruso — and a lot of younger guys.

Hulst is pitching for the Mustangs, though Brycen Rummel is too, and Rummel threw a good game against Rangely in the last few weeks. Caylon Joseph will also be pitching some.

As of press time, the Mustangs had already played four games, including the one against Dolores. Coach said the guys collectively have a great attitude, which he’s impressed by. He added they have a good work ethic and listen. He likes to see leadership from the players, and that’s also happening.

“We always tell them good teams are led by coaches; great teams are led by players,” he said. “They want to be a great team.”

The Mustangs are still dealing with some of the last few years’ same problems: strike-outs and leaving men on base, “and the errors — all the things you don’t want to do,” he said.

“But when we can put it all together, it will be pretty special,” he said.

Gabriel has nearly 20 years of coaching experience with the Mustangs. He coached the first time for around seven years; he’s been back for another decade. He’s been assisted by Ben Kirk, of Norwood and a math teacher, the last nine years, but Kirk is set to move on this summer and relocate.

“This is his last year, and it will drastically hurt,” Gabriel said.

He said Kirk really cares about the kids, does a great job as a coach, and it’s a big loss for the overall community.

Gabriel is also assisted by Mike Redd this year, who is working in maintenance for West End Public Schools District. Three managers are also helping out, including Kendra McCluer, Darcy Bray and Maria Camacho.

Overall, Gabriel said 2025 should be a good season. He’s thankful that the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) has kept district play in place for baseball, unlike basketball.

“It’s very beneficial for us,” he said.

And, the Mustangs have to travel this year and play the teams in the San Luis Valley, since they’re in the district. That means a few overnight trips are in store.

Gabriel agreed the Mustangs are typically pretty good at baseball. Last year year, the guys advanced to the Sweet 16, but they’re not satisfied with that, and they’re all holding each other more accountable this year. They’re also acknowledging that some team members are running track; others left for spring break week.

“We are spread out,” Gabriel said. “But we have high expectations, and hopefully we fulfill it.”

The field in Nucla is looking good, Gabriel said, though it does need rain to keep the dirt moist. That will happen when the ditch water comes on soon. There are many banners on the fence, and coach said it’s good the people are supporting the team. The Mustangs really like that.
