Sutherland and Ament are new trustees; Suhr is code enforcer

The Town of Nucla has two new town trustees as of last Wednesday’s regular meeting. On Nov. 12, the board announced that they’d appointed Jesse Sutherland and Wayne Ament to serve for the next six months.

James Pierce was also in the pool of applicants but not chosen.

Town clerk-manger Jessica Davis told the Forum Nov. 17 it’s important to note that both trustees must run for re-election in April, if they wish to continue to serve. Their appointments expire then. Their seats are not permanent.

Davis added that in the April municipal election, five town board seats will be available. She said the only two that will remain are Tim Pierce, mayor pro tem, and also Penni Philbrick.

Now is the time for citizens to consider running in the April election. Davis said many people express interest, but they don’t always follow through and submit a letter of interest, as in this month’s case for appointments, or complete the election packets which are due in election years.

Davis shared the election calendar with the Forum Monday. On Jan. 7 election packets for trustee seats become available for circulation at Town Hall. On Jan. 26, nominating packets are due to the clerk at Town Hall by the end of the business day.

Feb. 4 is the the final day to amend nominating packets to correct or replace signatures. It’s also the deadline for any person to withdraw their nomination, and for the election to be canceled, if the number of candidates including write-ins does not exceed the number of positions to be filled.

Feb. 20 is the day international/overseas ballots will be mailed.

March 18, ballots for all other electors will be mailed and available for pick up at Nucla Town Hall.

On April 7, all ballots, whether dropped off or postmarked, must be received at Town Hall by 7 p.m. for the election.

“Be thinking if you want to run,” Davis said. “It’s good to be proactive, not reactive. Bring your ideas and be part of the solution.”

Prior to election day, those who wish to update, view or verify their voter registration to ensure they receive a ballot should visit the Colorado Secretary of State's website at https://www.coloradosos.gov/ . There, citizens can register to vote or update their voter records electronically or via a printed form.

In other Nucla news, Rod Suhr has been hired for the position of code enforcement officer and animal control specialist. Davis said he will report to both the Nucla Town Board of Trustees and her.

There will be just one town meeting in December, because of the holidays. Davis said it will be a bigger meeting with the budget and swearing in of new trustees. Anyone who wants to see the budget before approval in December is welcome to come to Nucla Town Hall and view it.

Davis said she’s also trouble-shooting the audio on the Youtube stream for town meetings. She said she wants to get it right, and she’s listening to the complaints.
