Farmers market started; weekly Wild Gal’s meals back

Posted

Galit Korngold, of the West End and who owns and operates Wild Gal’s Market in Naturita, told the Forum over the weekend that there are two big things the community should know about: the summer farmers markets are back, and so are the weekly take-out meals.

“We kicked off the market,” she said. “The first was on Saturday.”

She added the market has been rebranded and renamed. Now called the West End Community Market, it’s on Saturday mornings too. And, there’s a new logo.

From now throughout summer, there will be markets from 10 a.m. to noon. The first saw a decent turn-out, and Korngold reported four vendors, though future markets will have more. She said vendors don’t have to commit to every Saturday. They participate when they can.

Megan Urban was on site over the weekend with her business Allen Farms West, selling dahlias. Some youngsters from the Unaweep came in with their foraging products: pottery made from river clay, dyed silk from natural plant colors, foraged herbal blends, ointments and tinctures. They also played the banjo, and Korngold said it was “really cute.”

Also, there was a candy maker with fudge and crafts. Another child sold muffins and tea. Korngold was busy making fresh-pressed juices.

Anyone can sign up to be a vendor, pay $5 to Wild Gal’s Market and set up.

“It was nice, still cool in the morning, and very pleasant,” she said.

She said the community should know it’s also fruit season, and the store is overflowing with fresh food. She said local fruit is rolling in, and there are cherries and apricots. She’s also got melons, grapes, mangos and berries.

“It’s abundant right now,” she said.

The Forum asked about peaches, having heard they’re ready early this year. She said she couldn’t confirm that.

It’s also time for the weekly take-out meals too. This summer, meals are happening on Tuesdays, since Flying Bear Pizzeria is closed that day. She said it’s good to fill a gap, as there are “slim pickin’s for a lazy meal” on Tuesdays.

She’s got the first three meals planned. They start at 5 p.m. and will run until 6:30 p.m. She said this year, they’ll do a call-ahead reservation, to ensure Wild Gal’s knows how much to make in advance. To order, the public should call 970-738-0067.

They went big on Greek food at the San Miguel Power Association’s annual banquet recently. Instead of Greek, there are other things coming right up. First is a lamb on rigatoni ragout, Italian food, with green salad and grapefruit vinaigrette. She added the lamb was braised all day on Sunday and will fall off the bone.

Next is Moroccan chicken with preserved lemon and olive, along with a carrot salad, and a chopped veggie mix. Likely rice will accompany the meal.

And, there will again be the Polish cabbage rolls, beef, with sauerkraut and a Hungarian cucumber salad. She’ll never forget a Polish woman on a road trip through the West End stopping to have the meal. The stranger said it was truly authentic and reminded her of her grandmother’s Polish cooking.

The public need not fret about the Greek food, however. It’s coming back for Water Days. Korngold said she may do pita wraps this year with the souvlaki. She hopes to see everyone there. She said she’ll be cooking up other healthy foods for Water Days too.

“That’s what’s happening at Wild Gal’s,” she said.

She reminds community that Wild Gal’s Market is open Sundays now, and that’s been really good. The store remains closed Mondays.
